1971 Mustangs were huge compared to
the previous models. Along with the massive body, there was a wide
range of massive engines. At the top of the engine line was the new
429 Cobra Jet, which replaced the previous 428 motor. Although it was
only a displacement change of 1 cubic inch, horsepower was a different
story. The 1970 428 Cobra Jets gave out 335hp, while the new 1971 429
motors have out 370 and 375 horsepower. Instead of the Boss 302 and
429, Ford released the Boss 351, but still offered a more powerful
Cobra Jet motor (a 429) as an option on the other models.
